Importance  Tobacco is a leading global disease risk factor. Understanding national trends in prevalence and consumption is critical for prioritizing action and evaluating tobacco control progress.

Objective  To estimate the prevalence of daily smoking by age and sex and the number of cigarettes per smoker per day for 187 countries from 1980 to 2012.

The Permanent Representatives Committee1 today approved a compromise text for a revised EU tobacco directive. It herewith endorsed a proposal that has been presented at a trilogue meeting between the Lithuanian presidency and representatives of the European Parliament and of the Commission on 16 December. The main objective of the directive's revision is to make tobacco products less attractive by strengthening the rules on how tobacco products can be manufactured, presented and sold.

The fourth in the series, this year’s report presents the status of the MPOWER measures, with country-specific data updated and aggregated through 2012. In addition, the report provides a special focus on legislation to ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship (TAPS) in WHO Member States and an in-depth analyses of TAPS bans were performed, allowing for a more detailed understanding of progress and future challenges this in area. 1.pngIn the 90's, together with the globalization of markets and privatization of tobacco factories by transnational tobacco corporations, Ukraine had been flooded with a massive advertising of tobacco products. Despite the ban on tobacco advertising on television and radio in 1996, outdoor advertising (2009) and print media advertising (2010), tobacco companies used all possible forms of marketing, sponsorship and indirect forms of hidden advertising, attracting young people into the community of smokers. As the result Ukraine became the 4th country in the world in terms of smoking prevalence.

ukraine_goes_smoke_free1.jpgThe problem of passive smoking is getting more and more actual in the world. Governments of many countries, doctors and the civil society take more stringent measures to protect the rights of citizens to breathe smoke free air. About thirty countries worldwide already have severe legal restrictions on smoking in public and in working places. In Ukraine 33 percent of adults regularly forced to breathe someone else's tobacco smoke, and 2/3 of visitors of cafes and restaurants are becoming victims of passive smoking.

Smoking and tobacco consumption is the biggest threat for public health in the area of noncommunicable diseases. If this trend continues the way it is, in 2025 tobacco will take away six millions of lives every year, and the epidemic will move to third world countries, where 65% of world's smokers will live at that time.

Since the emergence of multinational tobacco corporations into Ukrainian market, the lowest rates of excise duty and, respectively, cheap cigarettes, are the keys to their sustainable financial success. From 1995 to 2005 Ukraine has become the 4th country in the world in the prevalence of smoking.
